kitchen essentials

seeing that i just moved into a new place and new city, it got me thinking about what every kitchen should have stowed away. if not every kitchen, then just mine.


once you already own the basics, cooking is a lot less of a hassle. when you have an array of spices you collect over time, life gets easier and the grocery list gets shorter and cheaper.

so here are some things i cannot live without….

  • canned tomatoes
  • pesto
  • red curry paste
  • rice
  • pasta, your favorite shape
  • chicken & beef stock
  • milk
  • fresh basil
  • lettuce
  • your favorite cheese (i always have feta & cheddar)
  • fresh tomatoes
  • onions
  • potatoes
  • ground beef (frozen for anytime use)
  • chicken thighs (frozen for anytime use)
  • array of frozen veggies (good for stirfry)
  • bread (can also be frozen)


spices & condiments

  • salt & pepper
  • oregano
  • italian seasoning
  • cajun seasoning
  • cumin
  • flour
  • sugar
  • olive oil
  • balsamic vinegar
  • honey
  • soy sauce
  • ketchup
  • mayonaise
  • dijon mustard
  • minced garlic
  • minced ginger
  • butter



  • wok
  • large, medium  & small saucepans
  • cutting board
  • at least one good serrated knife & chef’s knife
  • colander
  • mixing bowl
  • wooden spoon
  • rubber spatula
  • masher
  • measuring cups & spoons
  • can opener & wine opener
  • peeler
  • baking sheet (for cookies & veggies)
  • baking dish (for casseroles etc)


now… start cooking!
